“Creek Crawling” – four in a series

These 4 boxes are located on a trail that begins at the historic Old Alton Bridge located in Denton County. The bridge, the only one of its kind remaining in the county, was built in 1884 to cross Hickory Creek. Up until 2001 traffic on Old Alton Road continued to use this one-lane bridge, each direction of traffic taking its turn to cross the narrow bridge. Then TxDOT constructed an alternate modern bridge adjacent to the historic bridge. The historic truss bridge was left in place and now it is part of the Denton Pedestrian and Equestrian Trail system.

Directions: To get to the Old Alton Bridge, travel to Old Alton Road. This road connects on one end with FM 2181 in the vicinity of Guyer High School. Turn from FM 2181 onto Old Alton Road and continue in a southwesterly direction for only 1/10th of a mile. Before you reach the new modern bridge there is an entrance on the left down a gravel slope to the trail head. Park in the small gravel parking lot and cross the pipe fence to reach the bridge and trail area. As you walk, you will see the bridge on your right and some metal benches on your left. Step over the low pipe fence to begin on the trail.

“Summer Hummer”:
Immediately after you step across the low pipe gate, look to the left of the trail and you will see two very large trees growing so closely they appear to be one tree. Look at the back side of the tree at the base and you will find a friendly little Summer Hummer to greet you.

“Starry Heart”:
After you carefully replace Summer Hummer, continue walking down the trail, pacing off about 20 steps. Look about 15 feet to the left and spot a very large yellow fungus on the ground (spongy looking knob on the ground). Walk to the fungus and then continue walking perpendicular to the trail to the very big dead tree laying on the ground. This tree trunk is about 50 feet long. The base of the tree is on your right, the top of the tree on your left. Look about 3 feet off the ground around the base of the tree to find “Starry Heart.”

“Celtic Cross”:
Replace little Starry Heart and starting from there, continue walking toward the hilly slope (in a direction away from the trail). Partway up the slope will be a short fallen log, with only the bottom hull of the log still in one piece. Celtic Cross is sitting on top of this hollowed out log, hiding under two other large pieces of flattened bark propped up together.

“Key to Fun”: After replacing Celtic Cross, turn and return back to the main trail. Walk down the trail until you reach the little hut and hitching post on the right side of the trail. On the left side of the trail directly across from the hitching post is a large tree with two trunks. Key to Fun is on the back side of the base of the tree.
