FREDERIC CHURCH’S WOODLAND WALK

Find The Olana Historic Site in Hudson, New York. Drive down the road until you see a fire hydrant and go down the slight incline to the parking lot.

On foot, head out of the parking lot and go on the Pond Road (the trail around the lake). Stay on the main trail. At the split in the road, at the big oak tree, veer WEST (right) staying along the pond. Head into the hemlock grove. As you round the bend in the trail you will see an oak tree with a Y base, the tree is straight ahead along the left side of the trail. Stand at the base of the oak tree and look due WEST. There will be a mossy rock outcropping diagonally across the trail. Walk to the hemlock tree nearly surrounded by mossy rocks. Look down for the first rocky “ledge” between the hemlock and the pond. Tucked underneath you will find what you seek behind the “pocked marked” rock.
