You will be traveling to historic Massanetta Springs, a natural cold spring just outside of Harrisonburg.

Directions:
From I-81, take Exit 247A. This will put you on Route 33 East going towards Elkton. Pass the Valley Mall, Target, Kohls. Within about a half mile from Kohls, turn Right on Massanetta Springs Road.

Continue on Massanetta Springs Road until the speed limit drops down to 25mph. You will pass the Historic Hotel on your right. Watch carefully for a white house on the right. Near the white house, turn Right between the stone pillars where a sign reads "Camp Massanetta". Park in the small paved parking area on the left. You'll be walking less than a half mile from here.

Check out the beautiful scenery! Walk down the camp road toward the bridge, but do not cross the bridge. The ducks are friendly and hungry. You might want to bring some day-old bread for them. When you get to the bridge, turn 90 degrees to your right.

Walk in between the fence surrounding the pool and two small white sheds. You will be walking towards the brick historic hotel. You will pass a white building called Virginia Cottage on your left. Once you pass Virginia cottage, you should be able to see the springhouse ahead and slightly to the left.

Go inside the stone half-wall enclosure surrounding the springhouse. Stop and think about the folks who bathed in these springs over 100 years ago, believing that they had sacred healing powers. Find and read the plaque in honor of Dr. Phillip A. Roberts. Turn around and you will be facing a stone column. Walk over to the column and lean over the wall just to the right of the column. Look down to find the Farewell Arbor letterbox.

Please contact Scout It Out if the box is missing or damaged.
