Difficulty Level: Easy
Kid Friendly: Yep
Estimated Hunt Time: approximately ½ hour
This “Salmon Dance” commemorates the sacred animal that has breathed life into this area for generations, especially among the native Americans who still fish here. Every year, salmon return from the ocean waters to return to their places of birth to spawn the next generation. The obstacles they must overcome are numerous and extremely difficult, especially with man’s impact on their environment and their pathway to reproduction. Still… they muster on regardless of the difficulty they face… driven upstream by an unexplainable urge and tenacity that allows the species to go on. Here’s to the mighty salmon…
Your journey begins from the parking lot at the Columbia Gorge Discover Center at Crates Point in The Dalles, Oregon. From east or west on Interstate 84, take exit 82 and head west to U.S. Hwy 30. Turn right and head north. Turn right on Discover Drive and follow the road to the Discovery Center. Park and head to the path that will take you back to "1848".
Follow the path to the right, past Olney’s Trading Post, the old wagon and the old Crate’s cabin. Continue to the right and head on the path that takes you past the naked tee-pee and around to the left towards a corner viewpoint that looks east-southeast (if you turn right at the intersection, you’ll end up back at the entrance and parking lot). Enjoy the view. The little white buoys you may see strung across the river are the nets the native Indians use to harvest their share of the salmon run. Turn 180 degrees, look behind you and spy the pine tree before you. There at the base of this pine, under its right foot is a rock that the Salmon are dancing under. Please be discreet when grabbing/replacing this box. This tends to be a high-traffic area. Thank you!!
