Cheyenne comes up from California every summer and one of her favorite activities is hunting letterboxes. Well, she’s created a stamp of her own and has hidden it for all to find!!

This box is hidden in the lush and beautiful gardens of the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon. From east or west of Hood River, travel I-84 to exit 62 which will take you to Westcliff Drive where the famous Columbia Gorge Hotel resides. This building was originally built in 1904 and has hosted visits from Presidents Roosevelt and Coolidge and actress Jane Powell. The grounds are one of the many highlights of this establishment and a favorite setting for photographers all over the state. You should be sure to visit the hotel between the months of November and January to behold the amazing beauty of the grounds in holiday lights like nothing you’ve ever seen.

Enough about the hotel… on with the clues to the box…

Once you’re there and parked, go to the entryway of the hotel and look south towards the garden. The things that Cheyenne thought were the most beautiful was Phelps Creek that flows through the grounds, the ducks that cluck, cluck, cluck around in the grass and all the pretty purple flowers. Head towards the flora and travel the paths, heading 170 degrees South (magnetic). If you’re lucky, you’ll come across a beautiful 3-4 foot fountain that spouts a heart-shaped flow of water, just before breaking into a grassy clearing near the creek. There’s a concrete bench just to the left of the fountain if you look. From this fountain, pass the bench and travel Northeast down the trail to the first lamp on the left. There at the foot of the lamp, under rock is the California Rose.

Enjoy all the great views around these grounds. Take a camera and enjoy taking some beautiful portraits of your favorite flora or subject that’s traveling with you. You won’t regret the time you spend in this garden!!
