From Bridgewater, take US 42 south 3 miles toward Mossy Creek. Take SR 747 (Iron Works Road/Mossy Creek Road) west and follow signs toward Natural Chimneys Regional Park for 3 miles to Mt. Solon. Turn right and take Natural Chimneys Road (SR 731) north about 1 mile. Turn left onto North River Road (SR 730) and follow it for 3 miles to the Stokesville junction. Turn right and take Stokesville Road (SR 718) for 1 mile to FDR 95. Turn left on 95 following signs to Todd Lake for 200 yards. Turn right at White Oak National Recreation Trail. Walk about ¼ mile up the paved road (toward Todd Lake) to the first hiking trail on the left. It is marked with a white-painted hiker on a wood marker.
Follow the hiking trail. After 1/8-1/4 mile, you’ll come to a long flat stretch of rocks on the left that overlooks the North River below. Stand on the rocks and enjoy the view! (But please be careful, it’s a long way down!) From the farthest end of the rock plateau, walk 18 paces (large steps) to a trail on the right that leads up toward a large rock with a small cave on the right. Do NOT take this trail but go another 11 paces to a small unmarked trail that goes up the hill toward the road. Follow this small trail. About half way up on the left, you’ll see a large pine tree with no branches except at the top. Continue up the trail until you get near the top where you’ll see a large Oak tree on the left with no branches except at the top of the tree. At the Oak tree, turn left and look for a tree with 3 trunks growing all together. Go 12 paces toward that tree. There will be a large rock on your right. Turn right and go 5 paces toward the end of the rock. Look for a triangular ledge that looks like the bow of a ship about 4 feet above the ground. Look behind some small loose rocks for the box.
