Joshua’s Land Trust consists of 58 parcels in 13 towns in Tolland and Windham Counties. Some have trails and some don’t. Check it out at www.joshuaslandtrust.org

This box is in the Josias Byles Sanctuary. It’s located on Rt. 44, .5 miles east of Route 89. There is a small sign at the entrance which is also a driveway. (It’s across the street from the North Veterinarian Clinic.) Go in the driveway and park in the Trail Parking on the right. There’s room for several cars here. It’s about a ½ hour hike to the box. The terrain is not too bad tho’ there are some ups and downs and rocks and roots.

Follow the yellow blazes along the road. There is a house on the left with a yard full of various animals, including chickens. You’ll be looking for the one that got away. Be careful on the first stretch, the fence on the right is electrified.

After you pass the house and yard, the old trail goes right. Stay straight on the new trail. At the next 3 way intersection, go right, through the wall. At the next wall, follow yellow. Now, back at the road, go right then follow trail 2. Stay on yellow.

Down hill. Flattens out and heads away from the brook. Through the fern forest and rocky, rooty swamp. Still in the ferns, left turn. Out of ferns, slight down hill then you’ll start to see white blazes with the yellow. More ferns then another stone wall.

Walk along the wall till you get to the tree on the other side that used to be a three sisters. (Don’t go over.) Even with the oldest looking sister, look in the wall below the top 2 big rocks. The chicken that got away will be here.

Be careful of the stone wall while you’re looking and cover well when you’re done.

We didn’t have time to explore further and I haven’t been able to find a map of this area. However, I did see one reference that this was a loop trail. So, explore some more or go back the way you came.
