Meadow Brook Hall – the fourth largest historic house museum in the U. S.

Entrance: Adams Road north of Avon Road. Follow the signs for Meadow Brook Hall parking.

Entrance fee: free

Walk south from the lot to a small garden with information about Meadow Brook’s history. Continue south past the mansion’s carriage houses and veer left until you see the flying horse.

Veer left and count the rose garden’s trellised columns. The columns are an original design first commissioned by Matilda Wilson and rebuilt for the garden in 2007. Take a seat in the octagon terrace.

English landscape architect Arthur Davidson was commissioned to create a master plan for the Meadow Brook Hall estate in 1928. His vision combined architecture, art and nature. The 16 Meadow Brook gardens are currently open to visitors, free of charge, all year long.

Travel back through the rose garden and veer left again at the horse. Enter Matilda’s back yard and stop under the circular balcony of her bedroom. Turn right when you pass the sunroom and walk to the gazebo.

In 1957, Matilda Dodge Wilson and her husband Alfred Wilson donated the entire estate, including Meadow Brook Hall and all its other buildings and collections, along with $2 million, to found Michigan State University-Oakland, now Oakland University. The couple lived in the estate’s Sunset Terrace home until Alfred’s death in 1962 — when Matilda returned to Meadowbrook Hall and lived there until she died in 1967.

Follow the brick pathway down the steps into the woods. Stop at the “Knole” and read about Frances’ 12th birthday gift. Walk through the maze and exit at the gnarled tree. Walk around the pergola to the guardhouse.

Return to the woods and turn left on the path. Charles, Dinarth and Ashour guard the letterbox.
