Dear St. Anthony,
Look around.
Something’s lost
And must be found!

I say this little prayer on an almost daily basis, and especially when I am looking for a letterbox! St. Anthony has always helped me out, usually with finding my car keys, but also in finding a friend’s lost diamond stud earring, and a missing envelope with over $100 in it collected by coworkers for a needy family. (The only time I can think he wasn’t able to help me was in finding an ex-boyfriend’s class ring, but maybe that was a good thing!)

St. Anthony of Padua is traditionally called upon by Catholics as the patron for lost items and for travelers (which makes him the perfect patron for letterboxers!) As a Franciscan friar, he traveled throughout Europe preaching the faith. But how did he become the patron of lost items?

” The reason for invoking St. Anthony’s help in finding lost or stolen things is traced back to an incident in his own life. As the story goes, Anthony had a book of psalms that was very important to him. Besides the value of any book before the invention of printing, the psalter had the notes and comments he had made to use in teaching students in his Franciscan Order.
A novice who had already grown tired of living religious life decided to depart the community. Besides going AWOL he also took Anthony’s psalter! Upon realizing his psalter was missing, Anthony prayed it would be found or returned to him. And after his prayer the thieving novice was moved to return the psalter to Anthony and to return to the Order, which accepted him back… And the stolen book is said to be preserved in the Franciscan friary in Bologna.” (from http://www.stanthony.org/aboutanthony/history.asp)

To find this letterbox, go to the St. Anthony Shrine located at 5000 Colerain Avenue in Mt. Airy (right up the road from Mt. Airy Forest.) From the parking lot, locate the large outdoor statue of St. Anthony – he’ll help you find it! Go to the right side of the stone wall behind the statue. Look down to find two flat stones (one grey, one brown) lying on the ground. Look underneath the brown stone.
