Goodan Ranch is rich in early American history. Buildings and a windmill at the preserve date back to the 1930s, when it was a working ranch. Goodan Ranch/Sycamore Canyon is enjoyable for its peaceful solitude, recreation opportunities and beauty, and contains more than 10 miles of hiking trails. Park opens at 8 am, 7 days a week; stroller, horse, and bike friendly. http://www.goodanranch.org/

The Kathi K Coffee letterbox can be an easy, 3 mile round trip hike, or a moderate difficulty, 4 mile round trip hike. For the easy, flat, wide dirt road hike, begin at the Garden Road staging area (not the staging area off of hwy 67), and head down the wide dirt road into the valley. For the moderate, single track, rocky hike, begin from the same parking/staging area and head up the side of the mountain on Martha's Grove memorial trail behind the cars. Either trail you choose, if you don't want to walk up the hill at the end of the hike back up to your car in the parking lot, the rangers are more than happy to drive you either from their station, or from the very bottom of the hill, just let them know when you pass the ranger station. They will usually ask you when you pass through.

After you pass the ranger station, noticing the original ranch buildings, the beautiful new ranger station/museum, and the stone bathrooms, you will cross a small wooden-plank bridge. Sometimes, there is water flowing here. You will pass another original old building and oak trees, till you come to a fork in the trail to your left, and the 1930s working windmill towering over you on your right. The windmill creaks happily when the wind blows. Continue on until you reach a second small, wooden-plank bridge over a creek, under the oaks. Walk to the middle of the bridge, turn around, and begin to walk slowly back towards the windmill. The Kathi K Coffee letterbox is tucked in, waiting between the bridge and the windmill. Keep a keen eye out for a more angular, almost square rock on top of many round rocks. As always, be aware to watch for snakes and critters.

Enjoy the letterbox, and if you take pictures of you finding/stamping the letterbox, we would love to see them! hcascio@cox.net Please e-mail us also, if the letterbox is missing or in need of repair.

This box was planted as 3 best friends celebrated one of our birthdays (Kathi K Day), and we have shared so many stories, laughs and tears over coffee, this is a perfect symbol for us! If you find yourself a little weary, or the day too hot, remember to smile and ask the rangers for a ride up the final hill!
