*October 2014. After a diligent search, it has been reported that the box is missing. Heavy rains may have also washed it away from its hiding place even though it was under some good sized rocks. Please don't go out of your way to look for it. But if you happen to be in the area and stumble across it, let me know. If by some chance you do find it, please remove it and contact me as I'd like to get it back and will repay for the postage. Thanks.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins

This box is located at the Lamanai Archaeologic Site in Orange Walk, Belize.
This area is also referred to as the Ruins at Lamanai.

There are places to stay in the area although we did not stay nearby.

We visited while cruising and it required a 1 hour bus ride and then onto a 1+ hr pontoon type boat ride on the "New River" - ( 2 1/2 hrs total travel from cruise port each way). However you get there - the clues start once at the site. I have listed it as a $$ fee area because it costs $$ to get to the site with a tour group. If you were to stay nearby - I'm not sure if there is an entrance fee or not. I know that our tour guide had to check in at the small museum on site. I listed it as 'extreme' since it is at least a 1 hr tour through an often hot jungle (you're in Belize after all) and you walk on dirt/mud paths and over rocks at times. There are stops at the few sites visited to learn about them - it is not non stop walking. There were small children and some seniors. So it appears that most people in reasonable health can do it - but we were all tired afterward.

To learn more about the Ruins at Lamanai - search it on the internet.

Now for the clues:

Once at Lamanai - visit the "Mask Temple" (as seen in the photo)
Stand in front of the temple and look to the left.
There is a dirt path that goes up a small hill and up to the top left side of the temple
This is the path that is used to go to the top and stand upon the temple.
Barely half way up the path there is another small/short path to the left that goes straight up a small hill into the tree line.
Once at the small 'ridge' - look to your left at the first big tree on the ridge top and go to it.
The box is at the rear of the tree between some large roots and covered with several rocks.
The heavier rock on top is to keep the 'howler monkeys' from getting to it.
Yes- there are howler monkeys. Kinda cool. They didn't bother us - just howled a lot from high in the trees.

Please re-hide cafrefully. Be discreet. Please be respectful of the actual temple and other ruins. This box is not on or in the temple - just nearby it. Site personnel are not aware of the box. In order to not bring attention to yourself while retrieving the box - sit on the ridgeline and take some pictures of the side of the temple or adjust your backpack. Use another person, perhaps a child with you, to go behind the tree and get the box. You can do it yourself if you're quick enough. If on a tour, there is sometimes a 'guard' that follows the group and basically just hangs around the area. As long as you don't look 'suspicious' he won't pay attention to you. People are walking all over the site and atop the temple. You may have only 15 minutes or so at the site if on a tour.

Box is a small "Lock n Lock" with cammo tape on it. Use caution on the trails as they can be slippery after it rains..
