A brief uphill hike, less than a half mile round trip.

When Kit Kat and I hike here, we’re hunting for butterflies (lepidoptera) as well as letterboxes. The cabbage white is one of the butterflies we’ve seen here.

Directions:

Find your way to the Braemore Preserve in the northern part of Guilford on Route 77.

Observe what a lovely job the Boy Scouts have done on the parking lot! The entrance had just been paved when we arrived there today. If you have a chance to hike farther along this trail or the other trails here, also notice the bird houses and bat houses that they've put here as well.

Start at the Braemore parking lot and head in an easterly fashion through the meadow and into the woods. Follow the Blue Square Red Dot Trail. Continue past the intersection with the Yellow Triangle Trail. When the trail starts to bear left, continue to follow it. Shortly after this point, you will see a blazed two sister tree on the right side of the trail. Look to the immediate left. 12 steps away there is a large dead stump with a tree growing out of it. Braemore Butterfly: Cabbage White can be found between the tree and the stump.

Cabbage Whites are among the most common butterflies in Connecticut. You’re most likely to see them here in the meadow area as you walk towards the woods.

Please be discreet and re-hide well.

We hope you enjoy the hunt.
