Spirit of Sunset Bay

Sunset Bay park is on the Lake Road just east of County Route 29 in the township of Scriba.

The first 3 boxes in this series have very small "signature" books and stamps. The last box has log book and stamp. There are no pens or stamp pads in any of the boxes. Please be careful when getting these boxes as they are located on the other side of the wall from 9 mile land that is patrolled and they are serious. Stay on the park side and you should be fine.

At Sunset Bay Park drive past the play ground to the parking area closest to the lake. Beside the parking are you will see a maintenance building. While looking at the building from the parking lot there is a trail to the left, follow this trail past the picnic area and pavilion to the stone wall. Please stay on the park side of this wall and heed the warning signs. Follow the trail that runs along the stone wall. You will soon come to a tree that is blocking the trail if you look to the left you will see away around the blockage. Go through the opening in the stone wall that runs perpendicular to the path. Turn left and follow this wall go around another tree that has fallen over this wall. Keep an eye on the wall within a few feet of the fallen tree you will see part of the wall is missing. It almost looks like a fire circle. Standing in front of this spot in the wall you will notice 2 maple saplings beside you. Directly behind these saplings at ground level remove a small stone and find "Spirit of the Stone Wall" When you are finish stamping and signing return to the original path, you should now be on the other side of the tree that was blocking the path.
Continue walking the path along the first stone wall. By and by you will see a big maple tree on the 9 mile side of the fence, it looks like something Tolkien would write about. It has a 'love seat' the is extends over the stone wall and the path you are on, keep walking you are almost to the next spirit. On your left you will come upon another stone wall, it has a T-bone wall and you are at the top of the T. Go thru the 'gate' and into the ruins of an old homestead. Look to your left, see the barn foundation, at the back of the foundation you will see an opening that looks like a doorway. Go to this door way and turn back toward the path. Can't you just smell and hear the horses? You should see a warning sign directly across from you. Gaze down the outside of the foundation wall on your left you will see stones that have fallen from the back corner of the foundation. Go to this pile and note the hole these rocks fell out of. Below this hole and slightly left is a large flat stone leaning on a smaller oblong stone, pull the flat stone forward and find the 'Spirit of the Barn'. After stamping in set the flat stone back against the smaller stone.
When you are ready proceed back up the foundation, past the entrance to the barn and walk straight up an incline you will find the cellar foundation of the house. Stand at the steps that lead down to the cellar, imagine the rows of canned good and the wash tub leaning against the wall. If you look up behind the house you can see a wooden fence that looks like an old play pen go to this fence. You are now at the well. Look around you. The are a few very large maple tree that shaded the house and the well you want to circle around the maple tree closest to the well. You will find the 'Spirit of the Well' under a triangular stone leaning against that tree. When you are done stamping take a few minutes to enjoy this spot, Imagining it is mid 19th century and early 20th century when trains were just starting to enter Port Oswego, there wouldn't have been many trees back then. For acres and acres you would have looked out over fields, stone walls all neat and tidy. Livestock would have been grazing in one pasture. Crops growing in others. Orchards all around. And a wonderfully cool breeze would be coming off the lake. Can't you hear the children's laughter? Ahhhhh!

When you are finished taking in the 'spirit' head back to the path and follow it back to where the cool breeze comes from. The stone wall is now on your left. Go through the 'gate'. Remember the love seat? Find it again. Standing under the seat look off the right. There is a large stone about 10 or 15 paces off the path. Go to that stone. It is moss covered on the side that is away from the path. Beside the stone is a very dead small apple tree. Between the apple tree and the large stone is "Spirit of Sunset Bay" . When you have finished doing all the LB stuff you can continue to follow the path toward the lake, back to your car.
Mingo and I would like to thank you for taking the time to find these boxes and greatly appreciate you letting us know about your adventure. Please come back and log you find.

Have a lovely day!
