Valley Spur Ski/Biking Trails are fabulous! Located just outside Munising, they are easy to get to. Valley Spur got its name from the old railroad grades that traverse this beautiful area during the turn of the last century. These rails provided the means to move logs out of the forest when this region was being harvesting heavily in the early 1900's. The trails great use of these old travelways! Imagine while you're out here the rumble of the drivers wheel and a chug-chug -chug!! Bring your bug spray!!!!!!

From the intersection of M-28 and M-94 just south of Munising, take M-94 and start your odometer. 4.1 miles west will take you to the entrance on the south side of the road into the Valley Spur parking area. From May to November the trails are open during daylight hours. No camping is allowed here. There is no trail fee during the summer.

Note: during ski season, this place is hopping!! You won't get to the letterboxes because of the snow depth (trust me, its many feet deep!) but come ski anyways. The ski trails are awesome and there is a warming lodge open on the weekends and a trail fee donation is normally made.

Stairway to Heaven Letterbox: Although the bikes trails are marked with numbers, I used the ski trail letter to give the clues, these letters will appear on posts along your route. You can walk this but I have given times in biking - just double to triple your rimes depending how fast you walk! Take the trail and follow the letter "D" the whole way. You will come across several intersections in your travels - stay on "D". After about 7-10 minutes you'll see the sign that says "Stairway To Heaven" - you are on the right track! Head uphill - yes, keep going uphill - - alot - - imagine this on skis! After about 25 minutes or so you will have a couple intersections - stay on "D" - you will find yourself at an unmarked intersection - the trail will make a 90 degree turn right - follow it!

If you see the sign that says "Heaven" in about a couple hundred yards, you are there!! With your back to Heaven, look at 202 degrees, walk 7 paces to a tipped over tree with a big root wad. Go around the root wad to your right. At the base of the root wad blocked by rocks and leaves, you will find the treasure you seek! To get back to the lodge - take Heaven on downhill - finally - all the way!!!!! Wheeeeeeeee!!!!

Valley Spur Letterbox: This box is a walking box - leave the bikes there at the car. Take the trail head and follow trail "C". After trail starts, "C will fork off to the left - take it and after about 10 mintes, you will climb a short, yet steep hill. On the top the hill, you will look for 2 clues - a triple forked maple on the right hand side of the trail. About 3 paces east of the triple forked tree is a brown post with a "C" on it and a Valley Spur sign on it. With your back at the sign look at 110 degrees and walk 4 paces. Look for a "shield of bark" - A triple stem stump will be on your right. The treasure you seek is behind the Shield. To return, retrace your path!
