The Hughes 269 helicopter is probably the best training helicopter in the world, and De Smet is the only place in South Dakota where you can learn to fly one.
To find the letterbox honoring this aircraft and the local instructor, drive north on Calumet, passing through the main part of town. You will soon spot a brick sidewalk. Park your vehicle before you cross three tracks.
Walk past Harvey's paintboard, and look for a wagon wheel which is touching some railroad ties stacked to take you upward.
The letterbox is tucked behind the bottom tie, just past the wheel. Please be sure no one sees you, and be sure it is tucked far enough in before you leave, so no one will spot it by accident.
