Take highway 124, located slightly west of Hesperus Colorado (between Mesa Verde and Durango) north eight miles to the La Plata City campground.
Read the information sign about Bessie Rivers arrival in La Plata City with six young maidens in search of a location for a “palace of pleasure”. These young maidens were terrified of bears and would not step outside the cabin. What the sign doesn’t tell is that Bessie recruited a cowgirl to track bears and protect the “convent’s” residents, just one of the many cowgirls who shoot straight in the west.
From the parking lot at the information sign, walk on the road upstream to a green utility box marked 8024 on the right side of the road. From this box, take 110 steps to a cement slab at 100 degrees. From the slab, take 43 steps at 10 degrees to a tilted aspen. The letterbox is hiding in a hole in the trunk of the aspen.
Box is a camoflagued lock and lock container. LONG PANTS are suggested for this box, as there are stinging nettles in the area. The box contains a hand carved stamp and hand made journal. Please bring your own ink. Remember to REHIDE well. Thanks!
