These 'boxes have been out there a long time! 6/27/2019 I checked on them. They are a bit worse for wear. But they are still there! The one in the cemetery doesn't have a log book any more and the rubber of the stamp has separated from the wood, but still stamp-able. The one at Kal-Haven trail is still in tact, tho damp. Too much water this year, I couldn't get down the streets to check on Richter's Cove, but I bet both of them are still there.
Celery Pond is a natural wetlands area near downtown South Haven. A group of concerned citizens-Celery Pond Advocates-are working to preserve/protect the area from development. Visit http://celerypond.blog.com to learn more.
These three 'boxes are located all around Celery Pond. The pond itself may be difficult to see. It is on the South side of Wells St., behind a boat storage area.
There is a whacky intersection that I will call *
From there you can easily find all 3 'boxes.
From downtown South Haven, near the drawbridge which is Dyckman St., turn on to Dunkley St. OR...
From Phoenix St. (not downtown) turn on to Bailey St. OR..
From Blue Star Highway follow signs to Kal-Haven Trail, this is Wells St.
Box #1 - Richter's Cove. West of * Pyle's PortHole on the corner of Wells and Dunkley. Follow Dunkley to its end to find a public boat launch and park with picnic tables and a dog walk area. There is a big rock with a plaque on it dedicated to Glenn Richter.
The letterbox is actually a letterbaggy, camo taped and hidden on the back side of Glenn's rock.
BONUS STAMP!! (funny) After replacing this box last summer, I got an e-mail telling me the original was still there!! Sure enough, both letterbaggies are still there!
Box #2 - Kal-Haven Trail. North of * on Bailey St. Turn right into the driveway for the trail, drive past the collection shed and towards the outhouses. Park in the last space of the lot and find the letterbaggy underneath the paver. (6/29/2019) So, my friends tell me, this is not a 'Paver' it is a 'parking space marker'.
Box #3 - Lakeview Cemetery. South of * on Bailey St.
This is a cool cemetery established 1850. A lot of interesting statues in memoriam to the Founding Fathers and Founding Families of South Haven.
From Bailey St., One Way Entrance. Veer towards tomb in a hill, proceed up then left. Keep looking left. Park when you see a huge marker engraved with wheat and parchment. Take a closer look to see it is the Histed-Wigglesworth Family stone. Beyond that is the Newcome family stone. From there, you can see a headstone protected by two lilacs. When you get close enough to read the name Sherman on the stone, the letterbox is at the base of the lilac on your left.
