This name came from a fun book by Paul Geraghty. Our family enjoys hiking near our home and found a great "hidden trail" that is used to get to a fishing hole. You too, will be able to find a "Hoppameleon".

Start at Route 62 South in Watervalley (just south of the village of Hamburg). Turn on South Creek and proceed to the end (at the Y take the left on the dead end). You will pass some wonderful statues carved from trees damaged by the October 2006 storm on a private lawn.

Park in the fishing parking lot. Follow the trail until you reach the first "Y" in the path. Take the right trail toward the water. Careful down the slippery, shale path. At the next fork, stay left until you come the roots of a toppled tree. (Changed directions due to teens) Continue until you see a "post-like tree" that is about 3 ft high on the right of the trail. Walk toward the creek and you will see a large tree with open "door" roots along the base. Under the leaves in one of the doors, you will find what you seek.

Remember to replace the letterbox as well hidden as you found it!
