Driving from Monroe, take Lakes Rd. towards Greenwood Lake.
Turn right onto Laroe Rd.
Driving from Chester, take Kings Hwy towards Sugar Loaf and turn left onto Laroe Rd.
From either direction drive exactly 2.1 miles!!
There is an unmarked enterance to Goosepond Mountain State Park. There is a small parking area and a chain blocking the access road. This is where you begin your walk.
This is one enterance to the 1,600-acre, undeveloped tract of land between Chester and Monroe. Lazy Hill Road, a former town road, travels through the park and this constitutes the trail. You'll notice lots of paths off the trail, try to figure out which ones are from Mountain Bikes and which are from deer. You'll pass a house in the distance on your right. The first clue is a young sapling with a blue blaze. Continue. Pass under a low branch that hangs over the trail. You'll pass a second tree with a blue blaze before the trail passes you between a marsh. This supposedly was one of the haunts of the cowboy Claudius Smith. They say he hid out in a rockshelter on the other side of the marsh. The rock shelters also yield artifacts of prehistoric Indians. Many of these are in the Trailside History Museum in Bear Mountain State Park. The trail becomes a bit broken up from spring thaws. Stay to your right. Ahead you'll see a bridge that crosses Seeley Brook. After crossing the bridge you'll see on your right the remains of an old gate. 2 paces more and you'll see a rough path that leads to the water. The path takes you directly to the waters' edge. This is where the letter box is hidden. Tucked in the arm of a tree.
