Oh dear! This box has gone missing over the summer. Do go down and get yourself something cool and sweet anyway, and I'll take this note down when I've replaced the box.
A great treat to chill you out on a hot summer day: head down to Paleteria La Pequeña Michoacana on South Sixth Avenue, a 1920s bungalow converted into an emporium of ice cold deliciousness.
Como se dice popsicles en Español? Paletas!
Paletas are made with fresh fruit. They come in some astonishing flavors: guava (my favorita), strawberry, sandía (watermelon, with seeds!), neapolitan, piña, tart-sweet limón, sometimes even Clamato (Yikes! clam flavored tomato juice popsicles! No, I haven’t tried that one yet.)
Raspados are an icy slush with a choice of syrup flavors like fresh mango, fresh banana, chocolate, vanilla, coconut, tamarind…,and add-ons like lechera (sweetened condensed milk), nieve (ice cream) and mangoyada (fresh mangoes cut up).
Pico de gallo is cut up fresh fruit with chile and lemon and salt.
Coctel de Elote is cold weather food: fresh corn cut off the cob, cooked and served soupy in a Styrofoam cup with cheese, butter, chile, lime, mayo and salt. It’s delicious!
There are two doors: the east door that goes into the paletería, and the west door that goes into the snack shop that sells raspados and pico de gallo and everything else.
Look under the fig tree beside the west door. That mysterious metal plate that supports some old machinery would be a good place to hide a little magnetized metal box. Under the square thingie, not the round thingies, I think.
Be sure to move away to do your stamping. Pico de Gallo, the restaurant to the south across the parking lot, has a little orchard/rose garden with nice shaded picnic tables just for letterboxers (as well as sublime tacos with homemade tortillas!).
Sean solapados! There are lots of people around so be sneaky!
This letterbox was placed on June 24, the Fiesta de San Juan, the traditional start of the monsoon season, celebrated since old times with water fights. So go home and drench the people you love!
