(Note: You will need to bring a stamp pad or markers and a pen .)

In 1852, some surveyors were establishing a trail in the area. One of the men lost his expensive hat in the creek's murky waters, becoming extremely upset! His partners laughingly named it Hat Creek. These boxes will take you through an underground lava tube and on a short part of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Box #1 - The Magic Rabbit Letterbox

The Magic Rabbit has lost his top hat. His new act is about to open in Reno and he needs that hat! Perhaps you can help him find it!

Note 1: Road to cave closed in winter.

Note 2: You will need a VERY GOOD flashlight per person--I have the scars to prove it!--sturdy walking shoes, and possibly a jacket as the cave temp averages 46 degrees.
Note 3: You must navigate a set of stairs at each end of the cave.

To go to the Hat Creek Recreation Area, travel on Hwy 44 from Susanville. Turn right onto Hwy 89. Turn right when you see the sign "Geologic Area...Subway Cave" on the right. Proceed to the parking lot. Check out the two info signs re Subway Cave and the Hat Creek Lava Flow.

Enter Devil's Doorway. Walk through Stubtoe Hall, which is aptly named! and then the wind tunnel. Pass the Sanctum marker in the middle. Curve to the left. Note the Lavacicle Lane marker on the right. Next there's a large lavalanche on the right and then a small lavalanche on the right. Standing at the Lava Bubbles marker, make a 90 degree turn to the right. See what appears to be slabs against the wall on the right. Look in a crevice behind the top of the third slab to find a black cylinder holding your treasure. (NOTE: Temporarily located behind first slab. Thank you to his
rescuers!) Please be discreet. Trek on and exit at Rattlesnake Collapse.

(If you wish to picnic, there are a few tables across the street from the cave or, if you wish, drive to Old Station nearby. We had excellent burgers and fries at the Old Station Cafe!....but we did note that it is for sale)

(Sadly, boxes 2 and 3 were destroyed due to a fire in August '09...)

Box #2 - The Tiger-in-the-Woods Letterbox --MISSING

(This is only a 2 or 3-minute walk.) Tiger can't find his lucky golf cap. There's a huge tournament soon and he must have that cap! Perhaps you can help him find it.

Exiting the Subway Cave road, turn left onto Hwy89. Turn left onto Hwy44 towards Susanville. Turn left when you see the Hat Creek Rim Scenic Viewpoint sign.

Walk along the paved walk to the left-most picnic table.

Walk towards the post with the emblem and follow the dirt path. You are now on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Soon on the left you will see a 3 to 4-foot-tall hollow stump. What you seek is in the the hollow concealed by cones and needles. Please take care when reconcealing.

Now enjoy the wonderful view of Lassen and Shasta from the scenic viewpoint!

Box #3 - Sunbonnet Sue Letterbox
(placed 9-9-03) MISSING

Poor Sunbonnet Sue!
She cries, "Boo, hoo, hoooooo!"
Sue's lost her finest hat.
Can you help her get it back?

This is a short and easy stroll through the forest.
On exiting the scenic look-out just mentioned, walk left on the concrete sidewalk to its end point. Walk along about 30 steps and enter the trail where you see the post with the PCT emblem.

Pass an area of log "rounds" followed by a fallen tree on the left.

Soon on the left see "u"-shaped moss-covered logs.

You will come to an area with picnic tables. Look across and find the post with the PCT emblem. (There is also one on your right.) Enter the trail.

Pass a "diamond" tree on the right and then another one on the left. Travel 155 steps (Mystery Gal) or 135 steps (Boatman) and note a stump on the left about 15 feet off th trail. Travel another 33 steps . Turn left. Walk about 13 steps to the fallen tree with its moss-covered roots reaching skyward. Search among its roots beneath bark and cones to find your prize.

Sunbonnet Sue thanks you!
