BOX CHECKED AND ALL IS WELL, MAY 22, 2010. THERE IS MUCH POISON OAK IN THE AREA, BUT IF YOU STAY ON THE PATH, YOU SHOULD BE OKAY!!
This letterbox is actually located across the street from Griffin Park in Grants Pass.
Take 1-5 to Exit 55. Travel South on 199 about 6.7 miles. Turn right on Riverbank's Road travel 6.2 miles. Turn right on Griffin Park Road, pass the camping entrance, and go to the upper day use parking area. Across the street from that is a horseshoe shaped pullout with a yellow BLM gate. Park near the gate, or across the street in the day use – though you will have to pay to park there.
Enter to the right of the yellow gate. At approximately 125 steps, go right and follow the bark path. Just past a small meadow on your right and a sharp left turn of the bark path, you will see on the right where there was a fire. Continue another 14 steps or so to a downed tree on the left of the path. Check under the large pieces of bark at the far end of this tree, between the downed tree and its stump. Good luck!
