D & H Canal Letterbox
Calling all Canawlers!
“D” stands for Delaware and “H” stands for Hudson. The D & H Canal letterbox is located on a portion of the canal which can still be seen. It was a mighty undertaking done with picks and shovels, mile by mile, to transport an important commodity – coal – from the hills of Pennsylvania to New York City.
The following clues are given to help your search:
From the West, as you come off I-84, exit 1, onto Route 23 near the New Jersey border, turn right towards Port Jervis, New York. If you come from the East, take Exit 1 onto Route 6 and turn left towards Port Jervis. Look for signs for “Fort Decker” along the main street after you get into city limits. Follow the signs until you come to a bridge that crosses over railroad tracks. DO NOT GO OVER THE BRIDGE, but look for a passageway to a parking area on the right. As you go through the entranceway to the footpath, there is a kiosk where you will find information brochures about the canal and how long the pathway is. On your left, there is a tree with many knot holes in it. Count 30 feet from this tree to a hollowed tree on your right. The D & H Canal letterbox lies within. Even though you do not have to travel far along this path, I hope you will explore to the end of the path and see the interesting features present here. There are benches along the way to rest upon and enjoy the quiet beauty.

*I would like to caution that the stamp is quite small so please be careful not to lose it.
