NOTE: This letterbox is missing, following the floods in Des Moines this summer (2008). Please check back at a later date to see if it's been replaced.

My friend, J.E., and I planted this letterbox together. She'd been on a long journey, and I picked her up at the airport, as friends do. To celebrate our friendship, we planted a letterbox!

Bring your own ink.
Level of terrain difficulty: easy
Time required after parking: 15-20 minutes

Directions:
I-235 runs smackdab through Des Moines. Take the exit for Martin Luther King Blvd and head south (toward the airport). Pass the Woodland Cemetary on your right and the turn-off for downtown on your left. You'll see Grays Lake on your left (east). Enter the park, following the entrance as it bends around to the south. Park west of the flagpole.

Clues:
• Cross under the steal arbor and head down the steps.
• Vear right, passing the boat rental office.
• Continue ahead on Kruidenier Trail, crossing over the long bridge.
• Just over the bridge, leave the trail and turn a sharp left, heading down to the waterfront. Notice two large mature trees along the shore line. The first has a large portion of bark gone around the bottom. The letterbox is in the second tree. Look in the mouth of the giant to find what awaits you.
