Graeagle is a quaint little town located approximately 48 miles north of Truckee on Hwy 89. Our family has been visiting this area each spring and fall for nearly 15 years.

There are many lovely lakes and hiking trails in the area. Your quest will begin at the Madora Lake trailhead. From Hwy 89 in Graeagle, take the Johnsville Rd. exit (A-14) and travel approximately 3 miles until you reach the Madora Lake turn-off. You will find a paved parking area and restroom at the trailhead.

Shortly after beginning your walk along the trail, you will come upon a wood bridge to your left. At this point, you have the option of continuing either left, or straight, along the trail loop. Go ahead and cross the wood bridge and proceed to the left.

As you walk along the trail, be sure to enjoy the quiet serenity and lush green ferns (especially in springtime). Eventually, you will spy Madora Lake through the trees and brush on your right. As the trail continues to guide you closer to the lake, you will find yourself heading towards its northern edge.

As you approach the northern tip of the lake, just before you round the corner, you should see a metal grate standing (crooked) among the tall grass in the water. As you round the corner of the lake, position yourself next to the center of the grate. From here, pace another 50 steps or so (moving forward) along the trail. Just about now, you should see a tree in the shape of a "V" to your right (next to the lake) and, on your left (side of the trail furthest from lake), a large rock nestled in the pine needles. Search around the base of this rock, and you will find your prize.

After you enjoy the contents of the box and return it to its place, continue on around the rest of the trail loop to appreciate the quiet beauty of this area.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles (complete trail loop)
