ATTENTION: The critters "found" our letterbox and all without reading the clue no less. They stamped their logbook, went on their way and forgot to rehide. We will replant in the same place , but we're going to try a different method to keep it hidden. We saw a no-brainer when we found "kirbert's" letterbox in Big Bend. I'll be able to get back up there to hide it around 21st of June.

The Hampton Spring Hotel was once a very popular spa and resort. Labeled "Dixie's Famous Spa", it unfortunately burned to the ground in 1954. The hotel was very popular in the early 1900's, when Taylor County boomed due to the intersection of several railroads. The hotel was visited by Theodore Roosevelt, and even royalty from the far east. They came to swim in the sulphor swimming pool that fed off of the Fenholloway River. The ruins of the hotel, including the swimming pool, pathways, a goldfish pond and boat slip still remain. Taylor County is in the process of renovating the site as a state park. Picnic tables, a walking bridge over the river, parking, and fencing have been added so far.

Water still flowed from the swimming pool up until a couple of years ago when the drought began. You can see some nice photos, and even a 1910 postcard picture of the hotel at the following link:

From Hwy 27 in Perry, take Hwy 98 west for approximatley four miles. When you see a sign on the right side of the road for the correctional center, turn left on CR 356. Go a half mile and you'll see the Hampton Springs park entrance on the right, which looks like the entrance to a subdivision.

Park your vehicle and walk along the path through the hotel foundations to the bridge. Cross the bridge and continue straight into the woods for approximately 10 meters. You'll encounter a massive old liveoak tree. It has a huge limb that branches to the left. From the base of the tree, take 10 steps directly beneath that limb. You'll find two palmetto bushes that are growing very closely together. Look in the space between them.

Our thanks to "Kirbert" for the hand carved stamp.

When you re-hide the box, please make sure that it is hidden from view on both sides of the bushes.
