Gunner is in a young resident of a Township at the geographical center of Oakland County. Gunner turns 3 years old this year, and in celebration of his birthday, I have hidden this letterbox in his favorite place. His nickname is “Gunner the Runner,” and like many boys his age, Gunner has boundless energy, so be ready for a good hike!

Gunner lives in a little white house on a lake, which is connected to another by a small canal. This neighbor lake is named for a beautiful and exotic flower that grows up from the muck. The lake that Gunner lives on shares its name with two nearby roads, one of which snakes along its Western bank, and is where your journey begins. Head North along this road until it curves to the West and the pavement runs out. Park in the lot just before Cross Rd.

On the opposite side of the street you will find the path between the large rocks and stumps. This trail will immediately split and you should take the path away from the road. Follow this footpath until it widens and you find yourself in a grove of towering pines. After the third upward climb, you will find yourself in a small clearing where hunters build fires to your left. The path will narrow again. You’re getting closer. The tall grass that lines this stretch of trail blows in the breeze off the pond to your left, and is one of Gunner’s favorite spots to hunt for butterflies. After a slight incline, you will see a metal signpost where you should opt for the path less traveled.

The trail will reveal a grassy valley interspersed with deciduous trees and shrubs. One more climb and you’re there. Before the next drop, spot the tree that stands closest to the trail, and turn to face it. Walk downhill with this tree to your right until a downed limb blocks your progress. Be sure to look high and low, Gunner is hiding nearby.

You can get back to your car by returning the way you came. OR you can follow the trail and enjoy more of what this area has to offer. A series of right turns will eventually lead you back to where you started adding perhaps a mile to your round trip.

Pen and ink pad provided, no hitchhikers please.

Things to know before you go:
This hike is great for kids and dogs. Be aware that this area is heavily trafficked in summer and fall, by mountain bikers and hunters respectively. Going before 5pm on a weekday is highly advised during warmer months. Leash your dog, and be sure everyone wears orange during hunting season.

Check the weather before you head out and don appropriate footwear. The climbs are not difficult, but turn to slick mud after even a little rain.

Please be responsible and pack everything out (including dog waste) so this area stays beautiful for Gunner’s children and grandchildren.
