To get there: There is a good map to print at www.kbs.msu.edu-maps & directions-local area. From the traffic signal in the heart of Richland (M-89 & M-43 intersection) take M-89 East to 40th St. North on 40th St. to C Ave. West on C Ave., Entrance on right.
W.K. Kellogg, founder of Kellogg's Cereal owned a summer home on Gull Lake and approx. 4,000 acres in the surrounding area. All of the property has since been granted to MSU which operates educational visitors centers on the property, one of which is the Bird Sanctuary.
Open 9am-5pm weekdays year 'round, weekends April-Oct. Admission $4.00/adults, $2.00/kids. NO PETS! Bucket of corn to feed birds $.50. About 3/4 mile asphalt trail, easy walk, lots to see. I visited first in March and led a parade of Canadian Geese my entire walk! A fun, easy walk, well worth admission fee. There's a butterfly garden in front of the Visitor's Center and a peacock to greet you as well...
The letterbox is a "quickie" located outside the Sanctuary. As soon as you turn off of C Ave., into the Sanctuary take a right, park in the loop. Ascend the stairs to ??? Looking towards C Ave., Spot a 5 stumper, or is it 6? 8/3/08 - One of the stumps has since fallen...the box is still there... On your way to it, find a plaque, Robert Maans Memorial Planting. The letterbox is at the base of the
multiple stumper.
