Camp Ford was the largest Confederate Prisoner of War Camp west of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. The site of the camp is now a public park, managed by the Smith County Historical Society. The park features a kiosk with extensive graphics detailing the history of the camp, a walking trail with interpretive signage, a reconstruction of a POW cabin, and picnic facilities. Open daily, dawn to dusk. FREE admission!

Camp Ford is located on US Hwy 271, 0.8 miles north of Loop 323.

This box was planted to honor my niece. She is a Girl Scout and started letterboxing to earn a badge. I chose Camp Ford for the location as it is a public area, but still close to the Girl Scout Office. Because of her, I became addicted. LOL

To the box:

Start out on the trail. You will walk pass 2 picnic tables. Stop and have a snack and enjoy the view. When you’re done, continue on the trail until it splits. You will want to go to the left. Take the trail until it ends. Find the information sign about the “Guards”. While facing that sign you will see a row of Pine Trees to your left. There are about 25 Pine Trees. Follow the tree line until you reach the last 2 or 3. From this spot look to your right. Do you see 3 pine trees? KT’s Ride is wedged at the base of these trees under a large branch.

Please reseal and recover well. Be sure to check AQ and LBNA for additional boxes.
