SEASONAL LETTERBOX AVAILABLE MAY 15th THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30TH (THIS BOX MISSING AS OF 10-01-09)
Lake of the Clouds Overlook is found at the very end of highway M-107. One of the nicest features of the Porcupine Mountains is a fantastic chain of cliffs known as the Escarpment. From the heights, spectacular views are to be had of the Big Carp valley hundreds of feet below. Right in the midst of all this scenery, framed by the cliffs and forest beyond, is one of the most well-known scenic attractions in the entire Midwest - beautiful Lake of the Clouds. Years of erosion have tumbled rock onto the valley floor. Like Old Timer Turtle, the Porkies is ancient and time moves slowly. Unlike Old Timer Turtle's shell of protection, the Porkies is more fragile and requires human protection. Please stay on the trails and off the areas we are trying to protect.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 1/2 mile
From the parking lot at the Lake of the Clouds Scenic area, walk the fully accessible boardwalk to the overlook platform. Take a moment to enjoy the view and interpretive displays. Then, step off the platform and follow the trail up to the rock wall overlook area. Carefully climb the rocks to the wall and enjoy the vast presence of the Big Carp River Valley. Then, follow the paved path to the first trail on the right. This trail is gravel with landscape timbers. Follow this path to the end of the split rail fence where it connects with the snow fence, just before the trail decends. Stop. If you look to your right, you will see a view of the Lake of the Clouds over a bald rock knob that reminds you of a turtles shell. To your right is a popple (aspen) tree right next to the trail. Old Timer Turtle rests at the base of the tree, under cover.
