Lauderdale Birdhouses (part of “Walli’s World”)

***THIS LETTERBOX HAS BEEN REMOVED AND ARCHIVED IN JUNE 2011. THE TRAIL BECAME OVERGROWN AND DANGEROUS.***

Start at the corner of Larpenteur & Fulham in Lauderdale, Minnesota. Park your car. (You may want to wear mosquito repellent during Spring and Summer months.)

Cross Larpenteur at the crosswalk.

Once on the sidewalk, turn right and walk about 9-10 paces.

Turn left on to a paved path heading toward the Lauderdale nature park.

Follow the paved path, south and down the hill, with townhouses on the right and a golf course on the left.

At about 80 paces, stop and admire the garden on your left.

Continue on about 45 more paces to where the pavement ends. Descend carefully down a short, steep dirt embankment to the bridge crossing a small creek.

Cross the bridge and follow the dirt path uphill about 50 paces until it stops at a cross path. (In the spring and summer, there will be a mossy hump here.)

Turn right at the T and follow the dirt path about 35 paces.

Turn left on to a dirt path going down a steep hill and up the steep hill on the other side, ending at another cross path.

Turn right, again, at the T.

Follow the gravel path to the edge of the woods, past the duck pond on the right.

Continue on the gravel path past the parking lot and garages on the right to the swing set/gym.

At the swing set, turn left and follow the dirt path down the hill (about 50 paces) and across a small creek.

From the creek, cross the meadow to the other side, following the path, if possible (it may be swampy after rain), to the edge of the woods on the other side.

From the edge of the woods, enter the woods at the dirt path and go about 35-40 paces up hill. Stop. For reference, there is a large, two-trunked tree on the left at this point.

Continue up the incline another 10-15 paces. Stop. Look again to the left.

About 9-10 paces in, on the left and off the path, there used to be a two-trunk tree with a cavity at the base. In July 2009, the large, west tree trunk rotted from insect infestation and has fallen and is precariously hanging over the path. Use caution. The east trunk is broken off and dying and is only about 6 feet high and is still standing.

There is another fallen tree nearby, where you can take a seat and have a peek. Remove the rock in front of the cavity at the base of the now one-trunked dead tree.

Behind the rock you will find the Lauderdale Birdhouses letterbox.
