CONFIRMED IN PLACE: Norbert confirmed in place 09/07/15. Seekers did not find the 2nd box. Hagrid last confirmed in place 11/10/2013.

The following was planted as part of the Mid-MO Letterboxing Society’s 4th Annual Spring Gathering: “Letterboxing on the Hogwarts Express” May 3-4 in Binder Park in Jefferson City. This box was planted with permission from the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department. For more information about the park including a map, please visit: http://www.jeffcitymo.org/parks/binderpark.html.

In the Harry Potter book, The Sorcerer's Stone, Harry and his friends meet Hagrid, the gamekeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. One of the things Hagris has always wanted in a dragon. When he won a dragon egg from a mysterious stranger in a pub, Hagrid took care of the egg until the dragon hatched. It was a Norwegian Ridgeback whom Hagrid named Norbert. Follow the clues below to find Norbert and his keeper.

Driving Directions: From the Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City (along Highways 63 / 54 / 50) take Hwy 50 west (toward Sedalia) about five miles and exit at Apache Flats. Go about one mile and turn right on Binder Lake Road. When the road comes to a “T,” turn left on Rainbow Dive, pass the Campground Road on your right, cross over the bridge and turn right on Binder Lake Road. Park on Binder Lake Road immediately north of the Rainbow Drive (and just north of the RED TRAIL).

Clue: Please note: one pace = two steps.
Near the gate at the intersection of Binder Lake Road and Rainbow Drive and just north of the RED TRAIL, find trailhead for BLUE TRAIL. [update:07/14/14: the PDF map of the park shows a dark blue and light blue trail. You want the dark blue trailhead which begins just north of Rainbow Drive; all the clues should keep you within the southern third of this blue trail area (though not always on trail)].

Follow the path uphill through the field. At the top of the hill, turn right (west)on trail to enter the woods. Pass several colored trail markers, then go around a bend to your right (to head northeasterly). Pass through a “squeeze gate” of two trees. At the next bend in the trail, notice blue arrow on the right pointing left. Continue downhill (southwesterly) around the bend and pass through a second “squeeze gate.” Continue until you cross the creek. Go seven paces until you are in the center of four small trees that form a square. Go left 25 paces on trail until you reach a rock between two trees. Go 6 more paces to another trail. [update 07/14/14: It's been a long time since I've hiked this trail but that should probably read "Go six more paces off trail--west or southwesterly--until you reach another segment of the blue trail]. Go Left. Cross creek at head of waterfall. Continue in a southernly direction until you reach a wooden footbridge.

Follow path as it curves north uphill and around a bend to a drainage. Go uphill following drainage until you reach the fenceline at the park boundary (you may also choose to follow the trail as it switchbacks back and forth up the hill to the same location but this way is longer). Stand in drainage just east of the fenceline where it crosses the trail. Face south and go 6 paces to 3rd tree on right. Update: 10/2013. This tree is now a stump. Look inside narrow crack in base to find where your dragon has hatched.

If you search well, you may also find his keeper and an excellent box by the Outdoor Girls, nearby and about a foot above ground level. If you need help, it is always a good idea to check the back of the logbook.

This trail is heavily used by bicyclists, hikers and mushroom hunters so please move away from the tree when stamping in so that you do not accidentally reveal the hiding location to Muggles. Be careful not to block the trail or to let them see what you are doing. Please replace box back in tree so that no part of it is visible and place a few leaves in the hole to make it look as natural as possible. Please contact me with a short story about your hunt and to let me know how the box is faring.
