SO AFTER I REPLANTED IT...IT IS NOW MISSING. SORRY.

The Galena Post Office is a beautiful, old, limestone building in downtown Galena at the corner of Green and Commerce Streets. It was constructed between 1857 and 1859. It is the second oldest continuously owned and operated post office in the United States.

The superintendent of construction was engineer Ely S. Parker, a Native American with the Seneca nation. He later served with Grant from Chattanooga to Appomattox, where he wrote in duplicate the terms of Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender.

Fascinating Fact: When Parker married Minnie Sackett, a white woman, in 1867, Ulysses S. Grant was his best man.

This building is worth a look.

The Box:

Begin your quest on Main Street at the historical DeSoto House Hotel, the oldest continuously operated hotel in Illinois.

Head south to Green Street.

Take Green Street east towards the river until you see the Post Office. Stop at the light post and read the very interesting description and history.

You may want to wander over and take a closer look. But, when you are ready. Travel north on Commerce street behind the DeSoto House until you come to the parking garage.

The box is nestled under a bush, resting on the ledge of a large green electric box.

It's busy here...you know the drill.
