ADULT CLUES

1. Go to Harrisonburg Court House on 61 Graham Street and walk on the brick walk way till you get to the flagpole. Did you know in 1833 the Court Square building was declared unsafe and a brick structure was built and stayed up until 1874? After that three more buildings were built due to poor condition. By 1896 five buildings have been built.

2. Then read the stone of the men who died during the Vietnam War. Forty of the men who died in the Vietnam War were from Harrisonburg and their names are written on the stone you just read.

3. Look to the right and walk 35 steps to the row of trees beside the road. Lots of the settlers of Harrisonburg went and helped fight in the Civil War also.

4. Then look right across the road at the sign that says North 11 and walk safely across the road. Did you know that the Court House originally design was suppose to look like Denton’s Furniture store facade in 1897 when the Court House was completed and Rockingham country’s population grew?

5. When you get there, you will see a tiny park to your right beside the Harrisonburg Children’s Museum. A farmer in the area, Thomas Harrison, donated two and half acres for t he building of the courthouse.

6. Walk in there, sit on the bench, and look at the beautiful painting

7. Look at the painting still and find the purple and blue flowers

8. Then look straight down from the painting, below that, in front of the ferns, you will solve the Courthouse Mystery.

Child Clues

1. Start at the flagpole on the east side of the Harrisonburg Court House at 61 Graham Street, Harrisonburg VA 22802. Governor Alexander Spotswood founded Harrisonburg in 1778.

2. Facing the flagpole turn right and hop 12 times till you reach the tree.

3. Spin around five times.

4. You should end up facing the exact same way. Fun Facts: Court Square was covered with rocks, many cliffs being so tall that a horse could hide behind them.

5. Walk like a duck towards the big tree with the mural of a country scene behind it. Harrisonburg’s original name was Rocktown.

6. When you reach the tree turn right and you should see the Harrisonburg Children’s Museum.

7. Walk across the street very carefully with your parents.

8. Find the alley beside Harrisonburg Children’s Museum. When you get there, touch your nose and say “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers”.

9. Go and take a rest on the bench in the alley. Did you know that the original Court Square cost less than 1000 dollars?

10. Look right at the fountain then look below it into the plants.
