Starting point: Tomahawk Pond... a scenic little pond 3 miles south of Orkney Springs, VA. Accessible from the South: From Route 259 turn North onto Runions Creek Road (right if you were heading West on 259, left if you were heading East on 259), Follow Runions Creek Road to Tomakawk Pond Picnic Area on the right side (Runions Creek Road eventually becomes Orkney Springs Road-610) or Accessible from the North: Take route 263 West through Basye, Turn left onto Orkney Springs Road (Rt. 610), Follow 610 for about 1 1/2 miles staying to the right when it forks, Stay on 610 for about 1 1/2 more miles to the Tomahawk Picnic area.

Adult set:
1. In the top parking lot you will see restrooms. Walk toward the restrooms and on the way you will find a trail that goes to the pond. Take that trail down to the pond. Did you know that Tomahawk Pond is a two-acre pond located on the west branch of Runion Creek and provides opportunities for fishing, picnicking, and viewing wildlife?

2. When going down the trail, you will come to a set of steps. Go down the steps until you come to a fork that branches off into two directions.

3. When you are at the fork of the trail take the trail to the right and follow that trail to the other side of the lake. Did you know that adult large mouth bass and blue gill were restocked in 1996? Also trout stocking resumed in fall of 1996. Fingerling channel catfish were restocked in the fall of 1996 and record-breaking size catfish were restocked in 1997. Grass carp were introduced in 1997 to control vegetation.

4. When you get to the first pier on the other side keep walking on the trail until you get to the last pier, which should be the fourth one over.

5. When you get to the last pier turn back and you will see a trail on the left of you. Go back to that trail. Did you know that this trail that you are walking on is where they bring the big trucks to stock all of the trout for people to fish?

6. About 26 yards ahead there is an opening, which is the first of two openings. When you get to the front of the opening turn to your right and walk over to the edge of the trail. Did you know that Tomahawk Pond is in the George Washington National Forest?

7. When you are there, look down along the edge of the trail.

Children set:
1. When you get to the upper parking lot of Tomahawk Pond find the little trail near the bathrooms. (Not the trail leading to the bathrooms)

2. When you find the trail walk down it until you see some steps.

3. When you see the steps, count every last one till you reach the bottom.

4. Then you will see where the trail goes in two directions. Take the one to your right.

5. Walk down the trail across the mound of dirt at the end of the pond, and when you get across it stop at the first pier.

6. Bunny hop to the second pier.

7. Then run to the third pier.

8. Then walk to the fourth pier.

9. Walk back to the third one all the time looking for minnows (the government put fish in the pond in 1998).

10. When you get back to the third pier, look for a large trail. Walk 52 giant steps down the trail.

11. When you’re done with that, turn to the right and walk to the bank.

12. Go down the bank and carefully look at the base of each tree till you find the box.
