ADULT CLUES

From Broadway, VA head onto 259 West towards Fulks Run. After about a mile turn left onto Turleytown Rd. Park across from the Old Cootes Store. The old store was built in 1834. The Union and Confederates fought there. Later in the 1900’s it became a post office. The store even had the first school in the county built there in 1931. After you park, walk over under the bridge that’s closest to the water. Take 15 steps and you should see where there was extra concrete poured out down the side of the bridge into the grass. Then take about 32 more steps along the side of the river. When you’re done you should see an old rotten tree to the left. Search the tree for the box.

Kid’s Clues

Head on 259 West from Broadway, VA. If you look over to your right you can see a really big river. It’s called the Shenandoah River. You should now have gone about a mile, and you will see a sign that says Turleytown Road. Don’t go past it, just pull off to the side of the road where there is a large area of grass. You are now at what is called Cootes Store. Get out of the car and look across the road, and you will see a bright yellow house that was built in 1834. That house belonged to Samuel Cootes and was once a store. Samuel Cootes was born in November 15, 1792 and died March 18, 1882. He is the one that founded Cootes Store. In 1858 when Cootes Store first was finished as a town, it had only 30 people living there. Now from the road, hop to underneath of the bridge. There should be a dirt patch there with the river on the left. The Confederates and Union fought right here. Now from the edge of the dirt patch, take about 15 giant steps and you will be at the end of the dirt patch. Now don’t be scared to walk in the giant grass. Just pretend it’s a huge jungle. Take about 32 huge steps forward with the road to your right and the river on your left. After you take those steps, stop and jump in the air five times. Now look to your left at an old rotten tree. CAREFULLY walk down to it. If you look closely there will be a pile oef twigs and the letterbox right under them. Yea, you found it!
