Children Clues

Start at 8570 Main Street Port Republic, VA 24471. Then walk to the back and take Water St to the right and travel until you get to the park on the lest side of the street. When you arrive, start skipping to the pavilion up ahead. Take a little while to have a snack or even lunch. Afterwards walk across the rectangle made of wood and check to see if there is water down below. During the Civil War, the water below was called a Mill Race used to power mills and tannery.

After exiting the bridge, take a left to find a sign all about the Palmer House. Read all about the history and continue up the gravel road and/or H2O Street, passing by a sign for Grandma’s Cottage and continue on. June 9,1862 the battle of Port Republic had just begun. The battle of Cross Keys was fought only a day before the battle at Port Republic. Another day, you should visit the beautiful battlefield. Then STOP at the octangonal sign and cross the road while looking both ways. Head into building #8691.

If you’re stopping by when the doors are open on (Sundays 1:30-4:00 p.m.), or by appointment, travel inside for a lesson and more clues. The house was built in the 1800’s and is also called “The Turner Ashby House.” It was built originally with 1 room over one with a side hall in the 1830’s and the larger parts were added within the next 10 years. During the war, the house served as a hospital to the solders.

~If the doors are not open, go around the object that would help you see in the dark and notice the original chimney from pre-Civil War days, from there you will see the garden. (Go down in the directions to where the * is to finish.)

Inside the front door give a dollar and sign your name. You’re now standing tall in the River Room “which illustrates the history of Port Republic as a typical colonial river town from its settlement.” While singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” scout out for the wooden duck somewhere in the room. Then loop around and in the next room sing “Rock-A-Bye-Baby” while looking for it in the carriage.

Through the doorway “ exhibits show the cultural development of Port Republic from an industrial community as a result of the ravage of the war and floods and the growth of roads and railroads.” Notice the timeline and then take a look at the wedding dress that you or your future wife would have woren back then.

Tiptoe to the sale room and buy a souviner if you wish and then continue out the green door, down the ramp, and gaze around the garden. *Find Ann Elizabeth’s memory and time. Hop over the mini stone wall and take 2x3 circle steps. Turn toward the evergreen boxwood and see what lies beneath.
