Join an adventure with the Cub Scouts of Den 12, who spent an afternoon in the Osgood Hill Recreation Area learning about letter boxes, nature, compasses and directions. This is the first of two boxes the scouts hid for everyone to find. How many of the landmarks described by the scouts can you find on your way?

You will start at the Stevens Estate on Osgood Hill. Begin at the Carriage House parking lot at the northeast corner. A trail enters the woods by making a sharp left to meet the Osgood Hill Trail. (Check out northandovertrails.org for a map of the area.)

At the first junction of the Osgood Hill Trail, take the middle trail northerly at 20 degrees toward Lake Cochichewick. The left fork takes you back to Osgood Street, and the right fork (not shown on trail maps) takes you to Half Mile Hill.

Follow the middle trail, passing a boulder on the right, cross over mud on boards, and pass a row of 4 large rocks on the left. Continuing on toward white birches you will pass a large square boulder on the right and a split boulder on the left. You may be able to see glimpses of the lake through the trees.

You soon reach a pine tree forest. Follow a side trail (a loop trail) on the left after passing a tree with 4 trunks. Head northeast. You will pass between piles of logs. Follow the trail to the top of the ridge. Stand below the Stevens Trail sign and face due north. Look toward a stone wall with a tree just on the other side of the wall. The letter box is hidden in the stone wall at the tree. Leave us a note telling us how many of the landmarks you found! Follow the loop trail back to the main trail. There is a great spot for a snack on the shore of the lake.
