Unexpected Animals Series #5-7: Child's Play

Burfoot County Park, 6927 Boston Harbor RD NE, Olympia, WA

To get to the park, From I-5, take exit 105 or 105B and follow the signs toward the Port of Olympia. Take Plum Street, which becomes East Bay Drive and then Boston Harbor Road. Proceed six miles. Burfoot County park will be on your left.

Here's another kind of animal you wouldn't expect to find in a park in Washington State...

What’s wrong, little one? Why are you crying? You lost your friends? Don’t worry, I’m sure we can find them! Let’s re-trace our steps…

Box #5, Bathtime Friend
Remember, we parked the car by the Horizon Trail Nature Loop sign. At the T, we went to the right. Remember the rocky water? Which one was your favorite? And there’s the meadow you thought would be perfect for playing tag. You and your friend wanted to cross it and follow the trail to the beach, but you had to continue with us on the nature trail instead. I’ll bet you don’t remember passing the sign about the Licorice Ferns. You were busy pouting at the time. Now we’re at a T in the trail. See the 2 trees right in front of us? I think you should look for your bathtime friend behind the left tree and between its legs. (This stamp image was drawn and partially carved by an 11 year old Girl Scout at a campout I was staffing)

#6, Playtime Friend
Let’s continue down the trail to the left. Do you remember passing that huge wall of roots? You wanted to climb it, but Mommy wouldn’t let you! You sat down to rest on the bench, and then galloped around the corner with the “chair” and right past the “octopus tree”. Did you sit on the bench to look at the octopus? I can’t remember. But I do remember the path taking a sharp turn to the right and you seeing “the claw” straight ahead. You were scared to walk up to it, but you did! Just past “the claw” we saw a sign about the Broad Leaf Maple tree. I’ll bet your friend galloped away while I was reading the sign to you. You might look for him behind the large maple that is down the faint social path just to the right of the sign. No, don't go as far back as the claw. It isn't that far back.

#7, Naptime Friend
Did you find your playtime friend? Good, then let’s go find your naptime friend. From here we continued up the trail to the Y. You saw the bench and were getting tired, but decided to keep going. We went to the left. We passed the next bench too. At the bench after that you were tired so we stopped to eat your snack of Teddy Grahams. Then you got so sleepy that you laid down and took a nap. I think your naptime friend may have wandered away while you were sleeping. He must be around here somewhere! Try looking for him near the short stump to your right (if you’re sitting on the bench). Not there? Oh yeah, this is where we heard a car go by and followed the faint social trail toward the road. Remember? Mommy had to duck under some branches from the first cedar tree we passed. Look between its legs and behind the fern.

Now that you’ve found all your friends, we’ll continue on the trail to get back to the car. Are you feeling better now? I’m glad!
