A Merrimack Brownie Troup planted Brownie's Puppy Paws in the Horse Hill Nature Preserve. The Brownies collaborated to create the name and design the stamp. Curious Crone is the grammie of two of the Brownies, and guided the Troup through the process.

The Horse Hill Nature Preserve is a 563 acre parcel of land owned by the Town of Merrimack. To learn more about this area visit www.hhnp.org.

Begin at Horse Hill Nature Preserve parking lot at 185 Amherst Road in Merrimack, NH. To reach the parking lot take exit 11 off Everett Turnpike to Amherst Road. From the traffic light in front of Burger King go 2.9 miles to the parking lot on your left. The Everett Turnpike goes through Merrimack between Nashua and Manchester.

From the parking lot, walk onto the Loop Trail. You will see Post #1 as you enter the trail. Soon you will see a yellow house over to your right. You will pass Post #2. (This trail could take you to your destination, but is is quite steep.)

Follow the Loop Trail crossing a culvert covered with small rocks. There was water flowing through the culvert in April, but it might be dry at other times of year. After the culvert you will be walking uphill.

As you approach Post #3, look through the trees on your right to see a series of three beaver dams and a lodge. If you would like to take a detour, go check out the beaver home.

At Post #3, you will turn left, continuing on the Loop Trail, blazed with white.

At Post #12, turn left onto the blue blazed Blodgett Hill Summit Trail. You will make a short, but steep and rocky, ascent of Blodgett Hill. As you near the summit, watch out for the blue curved arrow on a stone to the right of the trail which directs you to make a left turn up to the summit. At the summit, which is the highest point in the Preserve, notice a ring of stones making a fireplace. Continue to follow the blue blazes down from the summit (not the way you came up) a short distance to Post #16.

At Post #16, turn right and walk 15 Brownie steps. Turn and look to your right. A short distance from the trail, you will see a tree surrounded by boulders. This tree is larger than the surrounding trees. Carefully climb to the tree. Behind the tree is a flat-topped boulder. Between the tree and this flat-topped boulder you will find the Brownie's Puppy Paws, hidden under leaves and twigs. Before you leave, please replace the leaves and twigs to hide the BPP again.

You may return to the parking lot the way you came or choose to follow the blue blazes of the Blodgett Hill Summit Trail back down to Post #2. To do that, go back to Post #16 and go on down that way. In April, the Brownies had to hop across a babbling brook and traverse some muddy areas when they came down that way.

The Brownies would love to have you contact them, through Curious Crone, to tell of your experiences finding BPP.
