Starting from high atop the “Soaring Capital of the World” you are just a 5 minute drive from a wonderful center of the natural beauty of the Chemung Valley.

This little known gem contains nine miles of scenic trails. It offers hiking year-round and winter activities including cross-country skiing and snowshoe rentals. It has 12,000 square foot building featuring a museum with 43 species of live animals, interactive exhibits and a comfortable library for bird-watching and reading.
It is the local leader in environmental education; serving over 8,000 children in the Southern Tier of NY and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. It offers programs that include live animal presentations, outdoor experiences and hands-on activities.
Throughout the year visitors can enjoy a host of entertaining and enjoyable events. The parking lot is open Tuesday - Saturday during daylght hours.

After driving into the parking lot find a suitable spot to leave your car. Head southwest, downhill and through the gate until you feel welcomed. Sign in and grab a trail map if you please.

Follow the blue bird on your journey. You will pass a small pond and pavilion on you right and then head up a small hill and into a wooded area. Blue spots mark your path. Continue past Mr. President on a southerly route. Do not forget to spy the blue bird, and go east towards the stone thrones. Say hello to Skip and then skip farther up and down the little hill. Watch for the fork and choose wisely, but don't worry too much, you may find this road is like the old ones near Rome. Pass by the fallen soldier on your left. (Hmmm, wouldn't that be a good place for a letterbox? Maybe, … but not this one! We have greater sights to see.)

Continue downhill and look out for our deer friends along the way. Blue spots mark the way as you must hike a real hill this time. Blue and red birds wait to great you part way there. As you ascend the hill keep your eye open for a red spotted tree and another tree with 4 or 5 trunks on your right. Stand midway between these markers and point yourself almost due west at 250 degrees. Walk about 50 paces (remember, 2 steps to a pace). You will come to an 8 foot tall stump that the woodpeckers obviously like. Turn to your left at 190 degrees and take about 25 paces. Find your prize in the hollow of another nearby fallen soldier.

Have fun and take care to view the awesome overlook just below, but don't get too close to the edge. If you walk a short ways down the hill from the box you will come to another part of the trail system. Follow the trail to the right and it will eventually bring you back around to the bluebird and your car. A trail map can be found after a brief walk along this trail. Please note the “you are here” point on this map is slightly off. The bluebird trail back to the car goes straight ahead rather than left. Otherwise you can return the same way you came.
