NEWS FLASH: Due to recent illegal activity in the area and the ensuing police surveillance, we are removing this box. Too bad because we are so fond of this place!
It may not be replaced.....
Located here, very near the spot where the Sebewa Creek meets the Grand River, my Aunt Nancy and Uncle Melvin Chapin lived in a quaint little cottage during the 1940's and 1950's. Theirs was a unique living situation with their home being accessible only via a concrete bridge over the creek. Uncle Melvin had also constructed several 'swinging' foot bridges over the creek in various locations. The Chapin's also maintained several gardens here and a root cellar farther up the hill from this location. This area is now owned by the State of Michigan and is a designated State Game Area. The buildings were severely vandalized over the years and, for safety's sake, the State eventually razed them. This stamp symbolizes our regret for the abuse this once beautiful garden spot on the Grand has suffered over the years at the hands of some irresponsible visitors. But many other visitors have a deep seated fondness for this area.
Take heed, we wouldn't advise going out to this area during hunting season or just after a heavy rain. There are lots of low lying areas where water pools up and you have to find your way around them. Bring bug spray!
Make your way to Sebewa, a very small 'burg in Ionia County, MI located at the corner of Keefer Hwy and Musgrove Hwy (hint: 2 other boxes very near). Head east on Musgrove about a mile to Erdman Road and turn north ... it only goes north. Go to the end of the road and park there. Here your quest begins. Look west, do you see the guard rails in the woods? Make your way to them and find the ORV trail which goes northerly following the Grand River. Hint2: Across the river is an area known as Shimnecon...hmmm, might there be 3-4 boxes over there, too? Follow the trail keeping the Grand on your right for a ways and you will come to a Y-fork in the trail. Follow the left fork past the multi-trunk on the right and note the TV in it's 'cabinet' also on your right! You didn't know you would find such fine accomodations, did you? Stay the course up to the Sebewa Creek where you have to make a choice, right is not right. Make your way along this trail in a southerly direction or upstream until you find the spot where the rocks line the opposite bank. Check out all the old foundations on the other side, this is where the Chapin's made their home. The widest spot in the creek here was the location of the concrete bridge the Chapin's used to get their car across the creek. Note the natural 'bridge' leaning all the way across now! Find the two trunk just a little north of this wide spot. From that two trunk look for your quest at 108 degrees at about 28 steps amidst a clump of trees and vines. Please rehide well, Rehidation is an art form in itself.
The daffodils were in bloom on the old homestead when we planted these boxes in mid-April! When done exploring this area, make your way back downstream or northerly passing the trail you came in on, and past more appliances and keep going until you reach the mouth of the Sebewa. This is a beautiful spot even today. Many fisherman make their way here from time to time and, judging from the debris, maybe a weekend 'cookout' or two, also. Look at that huge multi-trunk tree! Head on up the trail to the northeast keeping the Grand on your left now and pass another fine fishing and 'cookout' spot. Stay on the trail as it twists to and fro passing many multi-trunks on either side of the trail. Finally you will come out of the woods and spot a multi-trunk with three large and two small trunks standing alone on the right side of the trail. What you seek can be found there.
Head back up the trail keeping the Grand to your left and soon things will become very familiar.
