The Ultimate Goal

Difficulty level: Easy
Short Hike, about 30 min. round trip, fairly level terrain. A couple of wet spots in spring.

We planted this box in celebration of the beginning of spring soccer season, as well as to highlight the lovely woods trail that goes around the soccer field in Thompson.

To get to the Bull Hill Recreation Area,
Take exit 97 off of Route 395, and go west on route 44.
Take a right at Providence St. (Rt. 171) (3rd traffic light)
At the second traffic light, take a right onto Church St.
Follow Church St. to the end, and take a left onto West Thompson Road.
Just after the fire station on the right, take a right on Ravenelle Rd., then an immediate left onto Messier Rd. Bear right at the fork, but it’s really more straight than right.
Go all the way to the end of the paved road and there is a gate to the soccer field.
If teams are playing or practicing, the gate will be open, but park at the side of the road before the gate.

The trail starts just inside the gate to your right, at the “Trail” sign.
Follow the trail through the piney woods. When you can’t see the soccer field through the trees, you’ll curve gently to the left and when you see an abandoned oven on your left, there should be another trail sign just ahead of you. You’re looking at the back of it.
Go left here, and look for a sign with an arrow on it. Take a compass reading of due south, and take 18 paces directly to a multi-sistered tree which contains your prize.

When you’ve stamped your book, go back to the trail and continue following the arrows and trail signs, which will lead you to a small bridge. Watch for beaver activity, the area just before the bridge may be flooded. If it is impassable, then retrace your steps and go back the way you came. If you continue forward, just walk through the parking area of the soccer fields and follow the dirt road back to the gate.
