This is one in a series of boxes planted in the state game lands of northeastern Pennsylvania. If you seek this box, please be aware of hunting seasons. I recommend wearing blaze orange any time of year. I don't recommend seeking this box during deer season, except on Sundays.

State Game Lands 227 is located in Schuylkill County. To get to the parking lot you need, travel north on PA-309 from Tamaqua. About half a mile north of Tamaqua, you'll see a road on your left at the foot of the hill. A sign points to Tuscarora State Park. Turn LEFT there. (Note that if you come from the north instead, this turn is very, very sharp.) This road ("Tuscarora Park Road"?) makes a few twists and turns, and after about a mile, you'll see an SGL parking lot on your right. Park there.

ALTERNATELY, just head about 1.6 miles east from the main entrance to Tuscarora State Park. The parking lot is on your left.

Clues:

* From the lot, head through the brown gate on the old road. For a time, there will be a field on your left and a treeline on your right.

* When a tree line appears in front of you, go right (and then immediately left) to follow the old road into the woods.

* The road will head steeply downhill.

* When the road levels out, it turns into a smaller trail, and enters a beautiful old growth area.

* As you continue on the trail, keep a lookout on the left for the root ball of a huge uprooted tree, just a few paces off trail. The root system will be facing you. (If you can see the river, then you went just a bit too far.)

* Head around the left side of the root ball.

* From the point where the roots meet the trunk, walk just two paces along the trunk. There will be a narrow tree at your left shoulder. Right about there, look under the trunk of the downed tree, beneath SPOBS (Suspicious Pile of Bark & Sticks).

* Please rehide well.
Have fun hiking back up that hill!
