Unusually for a story involving the great detective Sherlock Holmes, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is a full length novel and the longest Holmes adventure; the most famous story of the most famous detective in the world. Taking place in both London and Devon, the novel traced the story of American Sir Henry Baskerville, the heir to a considerable estate after the death of Sir Charles Baskerville of a heart attack. Due to a West Country legend about a huge demon dog (a ghost dog, if you will) roaming the moors and seeking an ancient vengeance against the Baskervilles, locals are convinced that Sir Charles’ death was no accident. Sherlock Holmes is invited by a certain Dr. Mortimer to investigate the matter for the benefit of Sir Henry. Holmes and his sidekick Watson, who is sent ahead to Devon, are drawn into a fatal adventure of superstition and revenge on the barren, gloomy moors of England.

Directions:
This box is located at Double Lake Recreation Area near Coldspring, Texas. If you are going north from Houston on Highway 59, look for the Coldspring exit at Cleveland and take it, then follow Hwy. 2025 for about 15 miles to the park entrance on the right. Enter and pay your fee, then proceed, keeping right, and park by the swimming hole.

To the Box:
Take the Lakeshore Trail next to the lake, keeping the lake on your left. When you come to where the Lakeshore Trail intersects the Lone Star Trail, take the LST to the right, and go straight at the trail marker. You’ll come to a clearing at the bike trail and, when you do, turn left and walk down the bike trail for 140 steps. This is a wide clearing and bikes have the right-of-way, so watch out for them. Look to the tree line on your left and you’ll see a four foot stump. Behind and in the stump you’ll find the Demon Dog.
