“Oh, nuts! We have to turn the car around.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I left my favorite compass back at that little park off Parson’s Road.”

“Again? We were all over that park! Do you remember where you left it?”

“No, we’ll just have to start at the playground and backtrack until we find it.”

****

“Okay, it’s not in the playground or in the picnic pavilion. Where do you want to go?”

“Let’s head counterclockwise around the paved path and duck into the woods at the trail head half-way between the first two park benches.”

***

“Will you look at all those cut branches on the ground from the thorn bushes?? I don’t think I’d want to wade through this trail at the end of the summer without long sleeves and long pants, but maybe it gets maintained often enough.”

“Yeah, I’m glad we came here in March!”

“Down ahead is a bridge. Did you drop it in the creek?”

“The water’s pretty clear and I don’t see anything.”

“Okay, then, the trail ends in a T. Which way did we go?”

“We had to go left because the other way is barricaded right there. Down, down, down we go. I know we didn’t go back up hill again until we left, so off to the next bridge, then.”

***
“See it yet?”

“No. Let me sit on this bench and think. We went around the bend there and were staring at that sign that said that the trail went underground.”

“Underground?”

“Well, yeah, it was pointing down at the ground. Didn’t see any tunnels, though. Silly people!”

“So we stayed on the level path, and, yeah, and there was a second one of those down arrows where we turned left. I remember the trees up the path on the left that are growing together. "

"There are two pair like that. They kind of look like they are holding hands with their roots. This must be a rather romantic spot.”

“Sappy!”

“I liked that bog over there on the right. Might make a good spot for a letterbox some day. Hey, wait, I see something shiny by the bog!”

“Where?”

“Go sit on the rocks at the edge of the bog, the big one and little one that looks like a seat with a foot rest. Put your feet on the footrest and look up toward the path.”

“Oh, yeah, there it is! In that old, rotten stump in the bushes, right next to the path. How’d you it get there? Okay, we’ve hiked this trail twice today, can we go home now?”

“Yep. Lead the way. Any trail uphill eventually leads back to the field and the paved path to the parking lot.”

“Homeward bound!”
