Larry & Penny Thompson Memorial Park was acquired from the Federal Government (it had been part of Richmond Naval Station) in 1974. The pond was excavated and paid for by bidding out the landfill. The Federal Government granted the county $2 million to build the park you see today. (The playground is the most recent addition, using other funds.) In May, 1983, the park was finished and dedicated to the Thompsons, nature enthusiasts and advocates of park beautification.
Clues:
From Shelter #8 in the park, walk to the pond and find a memorial to Elsie Cot, another naturalist. Walk clockwise around the pond on the bike trail (paved). When you see 5 tall palms on your right and a double-trunked big pine on your left, stop and inspect the ground around the pine tree for your treasure.
