04/07/2008: Already missing! We will be replacing this with a less conspicuous box this weekend.
We discovered this site while taking a spring drive around town. If you are a train enthusiast of any kind, this may be an unforgettable letterboxing experience - bring your camera!
From I-40, go east on Beale St. Turn right onto Route 66. After 0.2 miles (shortly past the Powerhouse Visitors' Center) turn right onto 2nd St. Just after crossing the railroad tracks, turn right onto Topeka St. Follow Topeka around the 90 degree left-hand turn. At the stop sign, Park St., make a right-hand turn. Park in the first turnout on the right.
Walk up the drive bearing approximately WNW (there will be a washed-out rut in the middle of the asphalt) up to the old train loading dock. The letterbox is directly in the middle of the fold-out dock. Be careful of desert critters!
If you are lucky enough to be at this site when a train is coming from the southwest, you'll hear the singing of the rails announcing its arrival. The view from the platform will give you an unadulterated view of the train approaching around the bend. It's a great photo opportunity! Wave as the conductor comes by, and he'll almost invariably blow the whistle for you. Don't forget to protect your ears!
