DIRECTIONS TO GALEN McBEE AIRPORT PARK:

From Portland get on Hwy 99 W heading toward Newberg, McMinnville, Spirit Mountain and Lincoln City. After passing thru Dundee, take the Hwy 18 Bypass on your left, which lets you avoid going thru downtown McMinnville on your way to the coast. A couple miles past that turn, you will see the McMinnville airport on your left. Once past the bomber turn left. Go maybe a quarter of a mile straight ahead to the small park parking area.

THE PARK & SURROUNDING AREA

Galen McBee Airport Park was named after a fella who was instrumental in getting the Spruce Goose set up on display at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville across Hwy 18. Below are a couple links I found on the internet that might broaden your knowledge about the Airport Park, the Spruce Goose and McMinnville area.

CLUES:

There are three trailheads starting at the parking lot. Chose the one which gets you going on a straight shot. Past the creek, turn right on the main trail that's not on the map. (Don't get side-tracked by any weeny trails now!)

Avoid that shell fountain on your right. Well, okay, you can visit there, but it won't help you find the letterbox -- instead, veer left and keep straight. Pass the cool mushroom house, straight ahead to a 2nd shell fountain. The path splits. Fifty yards or so from the 2nd shell fountain is a 3rd one. Your job, should you decide to accept it, is to find the correct path. Are we leading you on a wild spruce goose chase? Maybe.

At the 3rd shell fountain, take the right path. Just walk for a while and enjoy the beautiful forest path. When you pass the two stone benches sitting next to each other, you know you are going the correct direction. Then pass over the wood bridge. (Avoid the 1/2 mile path -- did you study the map at the beginning of the trail? You will know what we mean.)

When you come to a HUGH tree with a bench to the left of it, turn around and walk back 35 paces. At the end of a narrow log perpendicular to the trail is a stump. Under a bit of bark, you will find the Spruce Goose Letterbox!

As always, please re-hide the letterbox with as much care as you found it. Also, be aware that there is poison oak in this park. Use care when you step off any paths.

Good hunting! And let me know when you find it! aroselb@aol.com
