POW-WOW AT THE INDIAN CAVES placed by Bonk & Mandy 5/13/03

DIRECTIONS:
From I-95, take exit 1 and follow the signs on Rte. 3 towards Ashaway and Westerly (this is Rte. 3 South). A short distance down, take a left onto Frontier Road. Follow this to the end (approximately .5 miles). At the stop sign, take a right onto Maxson Hill Road. After a.5 miles, go straight through the stop sign. A short distance after the T-intersection, there is a barred gate on the left-hand side. There is room for 1 vehicle to park on that side of the street (you may need to proceed further south and turn around in order to park at the gate).

NOTE:
This “treasure hunt” is hilly and quite rocky. At certain times of the year it may be extremely wet and slippery. Exercise extreme caution.! If you wish, you may use the clues but walk around the rocky terrain rather than scrambling over it, (this will only lengthen your hike a few hundred paces).

POW-WOW AT THE INDIAN CAVES

Make sure you have your pad and stamp, hurry don’t be late.
For a quick stop at these interesting caves, cross carefully ‘neath the gate.

Head NNE several paces till you reach the Information Stone.
Who really lived here first, long before us, all alone???

From here you can choose to go two ways , 180 holds the better tally.
Around the curves, past the triple-trunk oak, down into the rock filled valley

What glaciers left behind......you must now traverse.
Caution for your better, haste is for the worse

Over the boulders carefully.....can you see any ferns?
Look closely and you might see some spores if you give the fronds a turn.

Proceed N along the steep rock ledge. Again, caution is the plan.
Up ahead, out of the hillside, is the moss covered Face of the Gorilla Man.

Pass the prominent feature, so it is to the west.
If it is raining and you want to stay dry....under his chin would be the best!!

Even if you’re tired, continue north at least,
in warmer months you’re on the proper heading if wet cabbage is to the east

Several paces further, look for the bent over tree.
It is the guardian of the triangle crevice, (or at least it seems to be).

Keep your current bearing...see the rock ledge way up high?
Lots of icicles if its cold and wet, ferns if its warm and dry.

25 to 30 paces further north, steady as you go.
Pass the upright cave with the lovely NW window

Don’t crawl through the lean-to rock tunnel, going around really is best.
Once you’ve reached the other side, take a gaze up to the SW.

Up the hill, into the V shaped area, underneath rocks and leaf detritus.
Find the box and continue the fun that awakens the child inside us!!!
